Information about Baptism, First Holy Communion, Confirmation, Marriage, Reconciliation and the Anointing of the Sick.
We are a welcoming and active Catholic community, with Christ at the heart of our parish life. Whether you have been part of Sacred Heart for many years, are new to the area, are returning to the Church or are simply curious about the Catholic faith, you are very welcome here.
Our Sunday celebration of the Eucharist is at the centre of parish life, bringing together people of all ages to pray, celebrate and serve. From our worship flows our wider parish life and our call to take Christ’s love into our families, our local community and the wider world.
Sacred Heart has a rich history and strong links with our local schools and the wider Westhoughton community. As we look to the future, we seek to build on all that is good in our parish while continuing to grow together in faith, hope and love.
There is a place here for you.
Baptism
Baptism is the beginning of our life in Christ and a joyful moment for the whole Church community.
If you are considering Baptism for your child, we would be delighted to welcome you and help you prepare for this important Sacrament. Parents are asked to take part in a period of preparation before a Baptism is arranged, giving families the opportunity to explore the meaning of Baptism and the promises they will make on behalf of their child.
There are also requirements relating to parents and godparents, and we will be happy to explain these and guide you through the process.
For enquiries about Baptism, or about being received into the Catholic Church, please speak to Fr Christopher Dawson after Mass or contact the parish on 01942 812174.
Marriage
Marriage is a joyful vocation in which a couple make a lifelong commitment to one another before God and the Church.
If you are hoping to marry at Sacred Heart, please contact Fr Christopher Dawson as early as possible so that there is plenty of time to make the necessary arrangements and complete your marriage preparation.
A minimum of six months’ notice is normally required, so we encourage couples to make contact before confirming other wedding arrangements.
We look forward to accompanying you as you prepare for the Sacrament of Marriage.
Visiting the Sick and Housebound
If you, a family member or someone you know is ill, housebound or unable to attend Mass, please let us know.
A priest can arrange a pastoral visit and, where appropriate, bring Holy Communion or celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.
Please do not hesitate to contact us, particularly if someone is seriously ill or has been admitted to hospital.
To arrange a visit, speak to Fr Christopher Dawson or contact the parish on 01942 812174.
Becoming a Catholic – RCIA
Are you interested in becoming a Catholic, returning to the Church or simply finding out more about the Catholic faith?
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a journey of faith for adults who are considering becoming Catholic. It offers time and space to learn about Catholic beliefs and worship, ask questions and explore faith in a welcoming and supportive environment.
There is no expectation that making an enquiry commits you to becoming Catholic. You are very welcome to come along, ask questions and discover more.
If you would like to find out about RCIA at Sacred Heart, please speak to Fr Christopher Dawson.
Sacramental Programme
Each year, Sacred Heart supports children and their families as they prepare to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.
The Sacramental Programme is a partnership between the parish, families and our Catholic school community, helping children to deepen their understanding of their faith as they prepare for these important moments in their lives.
Registration normally takes place in the autumn, with details published in the parish bulletin and shared through Sacred Heart Primary School. Families whose children do not attend Sacred Heart Primary School are equally welcome to take part and should contact the parish directly.
Parents who would like their child to join the programme should speak to Fr Christopher Dawson for current registration details and preparation dates.
We look forward to accompanying children and their families on this important part of their journey of faith.
